Pedagogy

How We Teach Western Dance

Walk through the steps one by one to see what a student practises at each stage.

  1. Foundations & Grooves

Posture, rhythm and the core grooves of hip-hop: bounce, rock and basic stepping. Students learn to feel the beat before they try to impress.

    • Bounce, rock and basic steps
    • Posture and balance
    • Counting and hearing the beat
  2. Isolations & Control

Moving one part of the body at a time. Isolations, pauses and transitions give students the control that makes a dancer look clean and sharp.

    • Head, shoulder, chest and hip isolations
    • Freezes and transitions
    • Control at slow and fast tempo
  3. Footwork & Freestyle

Students build a personal vocabulary of footwork and learn to improvise to music, responding to the beat in the moment.

    • Footwork patterns
    • Musicality and improvisation
    • Dancing in a circle with confidence
  4. Choreography & Formations

Learning and remembering choreography, working in groups, keeping spacing and moving together in sync.

    • Learning counts and sequences
    • Formations and spacing
    • Dancing in sync as a team
  5. Performance

Students bring everything together in showcases: costume, expression, stage entry and exit, and the confidence to perform in front of an audience.

    • Stage entry, exit and expression
    • Rehearsing a full routine
    • Performing at the academy showcase
