How We Teach Carnatic & Vocal Music

Walk through the steps one by one to see what a student practises at each stage.

  1. Voice & Swara Foundation

Voice culture and the basic exercises of Carnatic music: sarali varisai, janta varisai and alankaram. These build shruti, clarity of notes and a feel for tala.

    • Finding and holding the shruti
    • Sarali and janta varisai
    • Alankaram in different talas
  2. Geethams

Simple, melodious songs that introduce raga, lyrics and tala together. Students learn to sing a complete composition with correct pronunciation and rhythm.

    • Learning a geetham line by line
    • Pronunciation of lyrics
    • Singing with tala
  3. Varnams

The central practice composition of Carnatic music. Varnams train speed, breath, accuracy of notes and the grammar of a raga in a single piece.

    • Pallavi, anupallavi and charanam
    • Chittaswaram and sections at speed
    • Breath control and clarity
  4. Kritis

Students begin to learn compositions of the great composers such as Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Sastri, focusing on bhava, raga and sangati.

    • Understanding the raga of each kriti
    • Sangatis and expression
    • Lyrics and meaning
  5. Manodharma & Stage

Manodharma is the singer’s own creativity: alapana, neraval and kalpanaswaras. Students prepare a short concert with accompanists and present it on stage.

    • Introducing alapana and kalpanaswara
    • Planning a concert order
    • Singing with accompaniment
